Words from the Pulpit

Words from the pulpit

NEW !

I have decided to - I hate doing it! - post my sermons on the web because there are so many people who don't manage to get to church each week who might like to feel more connected by reading it! Maybe not! However, I will try it.

Each week (hopefully !) we will post a new sermon, so why not Bookmark this Page?

Just click on the Bible Icon or the Read More link to read the full text of each sermon.

Transfiguration

A Talk by Mike Morris, Methodist Lay Preacher and Lay Chair of S.E.C

I don't know whether you have ever climbed a mountain or indeed climbed to any high point in a surrounding landscape. As children, climbing seemed to be in-built in us.

8th Sunday of Epiphany

Genesis 1. 1-23; Matthew 6. 25 to end

I wonder how the reading from Matthew this morning made you feel. Did it fill your head with lovely soft pictures of the countryside - birds flying freely

7th Sunday of Epiphany

Leviticus 19. 1-2 and 9-18; Matthew 5. 38 - end

As I read the words of today's gospel I am aware of how challenging they are. Sometimes I say at the end "Jesus never does make things easy, does he!"

2nd Sunday of Epiphany

Isaiah 49. 1-7; 1 Corinthians 1. 1-9; John 1 29-42

In the middle of trying to sort this sermon out I received the most exciting e mail from my friend Maureen. The day had finally arrived

Candlemas

Hebrews 2. 14 - end and Luke 2. 22 - 40

Candlemas is, for me, the last of the celebrations of Christmas which go through Christmastide

Midnight Mass 2010

This year has been for me the year of the alternative nativity. One of the funniest was received by e mail - the whole story was told through the latest communication technology

Celebrity

Mark 6. 30 -34; 1 Kings 19. 9 -15; Psalm 113
Sermon for Evensong at St Giles
What is a celebrity? It’s someone that everyone knows – within a culture, within a locality or within an area of interest. In this age of mass communication a celebrity can be known across the world and have some relevance for many cultures.

Bible Sunday

Isaiah 45. 22 to end; Romans 15. 1-6 and Luke 4. 16 -24
Have collection of different kinds of Bibles on display. If needed share the story of Mary Jones with the children.

Rules

Isaiah 58. 9b-14; Hebrews 12. 18 -29; Luke 13. 10-17

The Twelfth after Trinity
I don’t know about you but I am always inventing new rules in my life – my latest one is don’t go on Facebook until the sermon is written..

A Celebration of Mary, Mother of Jesus

Luke 1. 46-55
A few Saturdays ago a lady came into the coffee morning at St James looking for a Roman Catholic church. This lady was Polish and had very little English. My biggest challenge was to convince her that St James was not a Roman Catholic church.

St Mary Magdalene

Song of Soloman 3. 1-4; 2 Corinthians 5. 14-17; John 20. 1-2, 11 -18
St Mary Magdalene is an enigma – a mystery, a puzzle, a teaser. She’s in a class along with the enigma code breaking machine at Bletchley Park and Elgar’s Enigma variations with the enigma of what the hidden theme tune might be.
